Dr. Fate is not a single individual, but rather a mantle passed down through various characters in the DC Universe, imbued with the power of the ancient Lord of Order, Nabu.
The original Dr. Fate was Kent Nelson, an archaeologist's son who, as a boy, discovered Nabu's tomb and was trained in the ways of magic. He donned the Helmet of Nabu, Amulet of Anubis, and Cloak of Destiny, becoming a powerful sorcerer dedicated to fighting chaos and evil.
Other characters have since worn the helmet, including Eric and Linda Strauss, Jared Stevens, Hector Hall, and Khalid Nassour. Each host experiences a varying degree of control by Nabu, sometimes acting as a vessel for the Lord of Order and other times finding a more balanced partnership.
